The Adventure Begins

August, 2008 – Craig and Cheryl are introduced to geocaching by their good friend, Margaret.  It is a superhero themed puzzle/multi-cache.  The library book containing the clue for the puzzle is not present.  Our heroes return home, their first geocaching experience a DNF.

(Time passes.  Craig and Cheryl do not have a GPS.  They aren’t sure about this geocaching thing.)

May, 2009 – Craig candidates (interviews) at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta and is called (voted by congregation to be hired–YAY!) as their new minister.  In preparation for the move, Craig and Cheryl buy iPhones.

August, 2009 – Craig and Cheryl pack up their stuff and move to Oneonta, NY.  Shortly thereafter, they discover the geocaching.com application for the iphone.

September 1, 2009 – Craig and Cheryl use the lite version of the geocaching app to search for the nearest cache to their new home, Soccer Town USA,  which appears to be hidden at the Soccer Hall of Fame.  They hike down and start looking.  Craig makes the find.  (Cheryl is unhappy with him for not letting her find it on her own.)  “Hey, this is fun!”

September 2, 2009 – Team-Ducky is registered on Geocaching.com.  C&C buy the geocaching app for $10.  (Pricey, but so worth it.)

September 3, 2009 – Team Ducky makes their 2nd and 3rd find.  They begin to understand the concept of “swag” and the idea of “signature items“.  Team Ducky starts leaving rubber duckies from their collection in the caches they find.  They buy some rubber ducky stickers from the local store for the smaller caches.

(Caching continues throughout September.  We run out of rubber duckies we want to part with. We start leaving GOOHF stickers in the smaller caches.  Cheryl suggests we buy special ducks to leave in the caches.  Craig finds the the “generic” make-your-own duckies.  “Maybe it would be cool to decorate ducks to fit the caches we find.”  They order 40 duckies. That should last them for a while, they think.  They buy some colored sharpies.  Their signature item is born.)
